Metamorphosis | music notation

For the Metamorphosis Music I Notation project, Annesas Appel took the numbers 0 to 9 as her starting point.  This is the first time she has chosen abstract entities. She succeeds in giving an ingenious twist to this apparent intangibility, her first step in the process of making her subject her own. As well as being represented in figures, numbers can also be written as words, without losing their value. The translation of these numbers in word form and the conversion to self-chosen systems - result in 100 variations of monochrome colours and music notations in the form of perforations. The successive steps are laid down in an artist’s book and the diagram in this booklet.  

The final work is a wonderfully colourful installation of 10 x 10 groups of perforated strips (225 cm high – 1200 cm wide). The music that can be played per strip using a music box is recorded on a CD.

Voor het project Metamorphosis Music | Notation nam Appel de getallen 0 t/m 9 als uitgangspunt. Het is voor het eerst dat zij kiest voor abstracte entiteiten. Aan deze ogenschijnlijke ongrijpbaarheid weet ze een ingenieuze draai te geven, haar eerste stap in de toe-eigening van haar onderwerp. Getallen zijn naast hun weergave in cijfers ook als woorden te schrijven zonder dat ze aan betekenis inboeten. Vertaling van deze in woorden geschreven getallen en de omzetting naar zelf gekozen systemen– resulteren in 100 varianten monochrome kleuren en muzieknotities in de vorm van perforaties. De opeenvolgende stappen zijn in een kunstenaarsboek en het schema in dit boekje weergegeven.

Het eindwerk is een wonderlijk kleurrijke installatie van 10 x 10 groepen geperforeerde stroken (225 cm hoog – 1200 cm breed). De muziek die door middel van een music box per strook kan worden afgespeeld, is vastgelegd op een CD.
