Colours_ a mathematical tale

How do we look at covers of books? If design and blurbs on covers are really the things that matter for a potential reader, it presupposes we are following main characters in handling or ignoring a book.
In my personal strategy to perceive books it seems I am specially attracted by patterns and partitionings of colours composing the cover. It has led me to search for a language that could translate these matters in bright distinctions and common complexities of colours. From my personal curiosity of the colours I started scanning all covers of the books in my personal bookcase. The different colours of an individual cover, distinguished by the eye, have been selected.
By transposing the original mathematical (CMYK) values of all found cover colours to a graphic grid, a new visual language arises. The type of colour representation I am using here is the form CMYK (C%, M%, Y%, K%), where C, M, Y, and K are the percent values for the cyan, magenta, yellow, and black values of the colour.
I am transposing these values to a grid of four vertically arranged faces. Each found colour value can be represented by one of the 100 according spatial positions of the four faces. A unique visual tale arises for each individual book cover. (quotation: Annesas Appel)
Annesas Appel nam als vertrekpunt van dit werk de vraag: “Hoe kijken we naar boek-omslagen en welke rol speelt de cover bij het kiezen van een boek?” Zelf laat zij zich vooral leiden door de kleuren van het omslagontwerp.
Met Colours_ a mathematical tale brengt Appel de kleuren van de boekomslagen in haar boekenkast in kaart en geeft ze een nieuwe, visuele interpretatie ervan. Hiervoor heeft zij de kleuren van 429 omslagen herleid tot het CMYK-systeem, waarin kleuren worden gekenmerkt door een bepaald percentage cyaan, magenta, geel en zwart. Vervolgens heeft zij deze waarden in een raster met vier verticale vlakken zichtbaar gemaakt waardoor een geheel nieuw beeld ontstaat.
Er zijn 8 verschillende prints te verkrijgen. Papier: Photo Rag 310 grs. Formaat: 80 x 80 cm. Techniek: Piezografie Bernard Ruijgrok, Amsterdam.
